What is red wine?

Red wine is a type of wine obtained by fermenting black grape juice with the seeds and skins of the grape. Harvesting and aging are the most delicate processes in the production of a good red wine, being of extreme importance to pick the vine at its perfect moment of maturation and age it in barrels with high quality wood for the time that the winemaker establishes.

The grape harvest and aging are the most delicate processes in the production of a good red wine.

Depending on the time in barrel and bottle, they are classified as follows:

  • Young
  • With Crianza
  • Reserva
  • Grand Reserve

The latter being the ones that receive the best scores and, therefore, the most exclusive.

Each Denomination of Origin impose the highest scores.

Each Denomination of Origin imposes the rules and times that must be met for each of these wines to receive this commendation. Therefore, it is possible that a reserve red wine may be aged for 3 years, while another may be aged for 2 and a half years.

At what temperature should I drink red wine?

It is recommended to drink at a temperature of between 14º and 16ºC so that the wine can show all its primary and secondary aromas.

What grapes are usually used to make red wine?

The main types of grapes characteristic of red wine are Grenache, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, being able to complete a bottle with a single variety or with several. Spain is a world leader in the production of high quality wine; some of the main Spanish red wine producing regions are Rioja, Castilla y León (Ribera del Duero) and Aragón (Somontano). Some wines have so-called Denominations of Origin (D.O.), which are regional certifications that can only be obtained by wines that exceed the quality standards of the region.
